An apology to Aboriginal Territorians

I, Michael Murphy, Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police am deeply sorry to all Aboriginal Territorians, for the past harms and injustices caused by members of the Northern Territory Police.

I formally apologise for the hurt inflicted upon Aboriginal people, and together with my fellow officers, I commit the NT Police service to do the hard work to transform our relationship with Aboriginal Territorians for a safer community for all.

We know that we cannot change or undo the past, but together we can commit to not repeating our mistakes and the injustices.

National Firearms Register

Complete a firearms self-check

On 6 December 2023, National Cabinet agreed to implement a National Firearms Register (NFR) to enhance community and police safety. The agreement will see the most significant improvements made to Australia’s firearms management systems in almost 30 years. The NFR Project officially commenced on 1 July 2024 and is expected to be operational from mid 2028.

What you need to do

The first phase of the project requires all NT firearms licence holders to complete a firearms self-check. This will ensure that all firearms records are ready to be uploaded into the NFR.

A link to the self-check is below. You will need to provide:

  • basic licence holder information
  • serial numbers of each firearm you own
  • photographs of each firearm you own.

If you have multiple firearms, you don’t have to submit them all at once. You can submit one firearm, then return later to submit another.
