An apology to Aboriginal Territorians

I, Michael Murphy, Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police am deeply sorry to all Aboriginal Territorians, for the past harms and injustices caused by members of the Northern Territory Police.

I formally apologise for the hurt inflicted upon Aboriginal people, and together with my fellow officers, I commit the NT Police service to do the hard work to transform our relationship with Aboriginal Territorians for a safer community for all.

We know that we cannot change or undo the past, but together we can commit to not repeating our mistakes and the injustices.

Alyangula

About

One of three communities on Groote Eylandt, Alyangula along with Umbakumba and Angurugu offers a unique opportunity to experience remote Northern Territory with most of the conveniences of a larger centre. 

Alyangula has a range of modern facilities including a 25 meter pool, squash and tennis courts, nine-hole golf course, BMX, gym – all of which are free to use.

There are active clubs like the Hash House Harriers, Dive Club, Golden Oldies, and Motor Cycle Club. Fishing, boating and camping are also popular recreational activities. For children there is junior soccer, rugby league, Guides and self-defence classes. Movies are screened at an outdoor cinema on weekends.

Alyangula is a well serviced and maintained town with extensive facilities.

Education

The Alyangula Area School and Pre School caters for children up to Year 10. Angurugu and Umbakumba communities have their own schools. The school is well resourced and class sizes are slightly smaller than you would find in most other public schools.

Health

The community health centre provides primary health care services and is equipped with emergency and x-ray facilities. A private General Practitioner (GP) operates from within the centre and Primary Health Services, including a baby clinic, are provided by registered nurses.
