Media from across the Territory
The Media and Public Affairs unit is an important part of the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services (NTPFES), providing a valuable conduit to the community via the media, and internally.
The unit is a small team that has responsibility for providing strategic advice on media and communications issues, handling enquiries from local, interstate and international media, coordinating media conferences and issuing media releases on operational and other matters of interest to the public.
In particular, the unit's staff plays a major role in the dissemination of information in the threat or event of disasters, particularly cyclones and floods.
The unit is responsible for maintaining social media, such as the PFES Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts. The unit also records/edits and photographs events for both internal and external use.
The unit produces relevant policy and provides internal media training to police, fire and emergency services personnel who may be called upon to provide information to the public through the media, and operates from 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday (except Public Holidays). A media liaison officer is on call until 10pm, seven days a week and is rostered for the purposes of emergencies and major events to ensure appropriate public information is available via the media.
