An apology to Aboriginal Territorians

I, Michael Murphy, Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police am deeply sorry to all Aboriginal Territorians, for the past harms and injustices caused by members of the Northern Territory Police.

I formally apologise for the hurt inflicted upon Aboriginal people, and together with my fellow officers, I commit the NT Police service to do the hard work to transform our relationship with Aboriginal Territorians for a safer community for all.

We know that we cannot change or undo the past, but together we can commit to not repeating our mistakes and the injustices.

With over 50 police stations, remote policing provides people with the opportunity to experience the best the Territory has to offer.

Often people who have had the opportunity to live, work and police in remote communities of the Northern Territory develop a whole range of work and life skills that make them a more competent, well rounded and experienced police officer.

It’s also great for promotional opportunity as it is highly unlikely that people will be able to enter specialist policing streams in the future without having remote policing experience behind them, such is the importance placed on the knowledge, skills and attributes remote service provides.

Remote policing is your opportunity to make a difference, experience life in our fantastic towns and communities and allow yourself to grow as a Territory police officer. The challenge is yours to take and the opportunities are there! These profiles will provide you and your family with snapshot information for each remote location.

The Bush Telegraph (BushTel) provides a central point for information about communities, towns, and regions in the Northern Territory. It provides maps, profiles, services, news and events, contacts and discussion forums. The link for this location is: www.bushtel.nt.gov.au/
