From time to time, police come into possession of items where ownership is unknown. The items listed below have not been claimed by a person with a legal right to the goods within three months.
In accordance with section 166 of the Police Administration Act 1978, the below notices are published to alert the public of the police intention to sell or otherwise dispose of the listed items.
If you believe an item listed in the disposal schedule belongs to you, please contact your local police station who will assist you in locating your item. Please note that 100 points of identification and evidence of ownership will be required in order to claim your item.
166 sale or other disposal items
(1) This section applies in relation to an item that has lawfully come into the possession of a member in the course of the member's duties.
(2) Subject to section 112 of the Classification of Publications, Films and Computer Games Act 1985, the item may be sold by public auction, or otherwise disposed of as directed by the Commissioner, if:
- the item is not claimed by a person who has a legal right to the item within 3 months; and
- a notice of intention to sell or otherwise dispose of the item has been published on the Agency's website or in another manner as directed by the Commissioner.
(3) Despite subsection (2), if, in the opinion of a member, the item is of a perishable nature, the Commissioner may authorise the sale or other disposal of the item at any time and without notice.
(4) A sale or other disposal under this section is valid against all persons.
