OC Spray trial

On 11 June 2025, the Chief Minister announced the Government’s proposal for a 12-month trial to allow members of the public access to Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray for self-defence purposes.

The Northern Territory Police Force (NTPF) is leading the development and delivery of the proposed trial on behalf of the Government. A proposed commencement date of 1 September 2025 has been nominated. As planning progresses, updates will be provided through official NT Police Force and NT Government channels.

About the trial

  • Dealers will be contacted by the NTPF once participation requirements are confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy OC spray now?

No. OC spray remains a prohibited weapon under the Weapons Control Act 2001 and is not currently lawful for public possession or sale.

Who will be eligible to carry OC spray?

Eligibility criteria will be published closer to the trial’s commencement.

How do I apply or express interest in selling OC spray?

Licensed firearms dealers will be contacted by the NTPF in due course. No applications or expressions of interest can be accepted at this time.
