Always read the information provided by the manufacturer. OC spray may cause temporary eye and respiratory irritation, pain, and disorientation. If you’re sprayed:
- Keep calm
- Breathe normally, effects should dissipate within 10 – 45 minutes
- Seek medical help if irritation continues
- Rinse the affected area with cool water
- Remove contaminated clothing if appropriate
- DO NOT use lotion or ointment on affected area
- DO NOT rub area that was sprayed
- DO NOT drive while affected
- How do I need to store OC spray?
OC spray must be stored safely and securely, according to the manufacturers’ instructions on the canister. OC spray owners must ensure all reasonable precautions are taken to ensure that the OC spray is not stolen, lost or does not come into the possession of a person who is not permitted to possess it.
- Can I use OC Spray within a licensed premise?
No. A person must not use OC spray inside a venue licensed to sell alcohol, other than a licenced venue that only sells alcohol for off premises consumption (e.g. OC spray must not be used inside a nightclub, bar or licensed restaurant).

Misuse is using OC Spray for any purposes other than when an eligible person believes it is necessary in self-defence and the use of OC Spray is a reasonable response in the circumstances.

No, you cannot give your unused OC Spray to someone else. Any unused cans must be surrendered to your local police station or a Declared Firearms Dealer. Anyone wanting to possess, carry and use OC Spray must complete the Buyer Declaration at a Declared Firearms Dealer before sale.
