Can I buy OC spray online?

No, OC spray can only be purchased in person from a participating Firearms Dealer.

Can I buy OC spray now?

Yes, from 1 September 2025.

Where can I buy it?

How many cans of OC spray can I buy?

There is no purchase limit on the number of cans of OC spray for the trial. However, in a public place, eligible persons must not possess or carry more than 2 OC sprays unless you are disposing of or surrendering or travelling to a place to dispose of or surrender, the OC sprays.

What if I am found carrying OC spray by police?

Anyone in possession of OC spray is required to carry a copy of their Buyer Declaration from the time of purchase, and be able to show a copy of the declaration when requested to do so by a police officer. If you do not have your declaration with you, the OC spray may be seized. You will have 1 business day from the request to produce the signed Buyer Declaration and display by attending the advised police station.

What is the approved size or weight limit for OC spray canisters under the trial?

The OC spray available to the public during the trial will have a maximum canister size of 45g or 45ml.

Can I carry OC spray while travelling interstate?

No. The exemption allowing public possession only applies within the Northern Territory during the trial. If you travel interstate with OC spray, you may be breaking the law in other jurisdictions. Always check the local laws before travelling.

Do I need to have my OC spray concealed when I’m carrying it?

When a member of the public is carrying OC spray, it should not be publicly visible. Members of the public visibly carrying OC spray are in breach of the trial conditions and are committing an offence. Crowd controllers and security officers are subject to different conditions regarding visible carrying of OC spray.
