An apology to Aboriginal Territorians

I, Michael Murphy, Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police am deeply sorry to all Aboriginal Territorians, for the past harms and injustices caused by members of the Northern Territory Police.

I formally apologise for the hurt inflicted upon Aboriginal people, and together with my fellow officers, I commit the NT Police service to do the hard work to transform our relationship with Aboriginal Territorians for a safer community for all.

We know that we cannot change or undo the past, but together we can commit to not repeating our mistakes and the injustices.

Gunbalanya

About

The area around Gunbalanya is known as Stone Country, a name inspired by the spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment and rock formations that emerge from the floodplains surrounding the town. The community is situated near the East Alligator River on a small ridge between coastal black soil plain marshes.

The spectacular natural wilderness provides a range of recreational bush activities and outdoor pursuits, barramundi fishing and social barbecues. There is a swimming pool and a local sport and recreation club.

Education

The Gunbalanya Community Education Centre (CEC) provides preschool, primary and secondary education for the young people of Gunbalanya and adults through its various educational programs.

Health

The Community Health Centre provides primary health care services to the residents via a mix of Aboriginal health workers and registered nurses, as well as visits by a district medical officer.

All health emergencies are airlifted (via the NT Aerial Medical Service) to Darwin Public Hospital.
