About
Minjilang is the name of the Aboriginal community on Croker Island, situated just off the Coburg Peninsula approximately 250km north east of Darwin.
Situated in the luminescent Arafura Sea, Croker Island is home to abundant wildlife and flora that inhabit the beaches, wetlands and swamps and expansive native bushland.
Police members have adopted a proactive role to policing in the community. Due to the location of Minjilang there are large scale fishing operations in the area, marine patrols are a regular part of rural patrols.
Fishing is the most popular leisure activity and there is a fishing guide on the island that operates out of Palm Bay. Camping and hunting trips are possible. Prior permission from local landowners is required. Large saltwater crocodiles are prolific in the area and box jellyfish inhabit the waterways.
Education
Mamaruni School has a current enrolment of approximately 80 students.
In March 2005, Cyclone Ingrid destroyed the main classroom block and the teachers residence. Temporary transportable classrooms were brought in while the new school was built. In May 2006, the new buildings were completed and the classrooms relocated.
There are four areas within the school, Preschool, Junior School, Middle School and an Upper School. High School Students board in Darwin.
Health
Croker island has a new $3.33 million health centre which includes an ambulance bay, a dedicated dental area and a special paediatric room. It also includes separate women and men’s consulting areas. Staff include registered nurses and senior Aboriginal health workers.
A doctor visits the community on a fortnightly basis and a dentist periodically.
