Post incidents

This webpage pertains to incidents where a risk to life or property persists after the event, such as fires in residential or workplace settings.

Post-Incident Site Handover Sheet

You may have received a Post-Incident Site Handover Sheet that provides information about the risks of entering the site and the recommended safety precautions.

If you have not received the Post-Incident Site Handover Sheet, check with family, friends, colleagues or the NT Police. If you or others were not present at the time, it may have been placed on the premises or in the letterbox.

Health Safety and Environmental considerations

A fire affected structure may not be stable or be structurally compromised and may not be deemed safe to enter after a fire. Where the structure has been impacted by heat or water, advice from a builder or engineer is recommended. Only enter if advised to do so by the appropriate professionals and with the recommended safety equipment.

Burned structures, fittings, carpets and furniture can continue to release tiny particles as well as fumes and gases for several days after the fire has been extinguished. Some fumes and particles may be a risk to your health or lead to the aggravation of respiratory medical conditions or allergies. Using a protective mask over the mouth and nose and minimising access to smoke and fire affected spaces is recommended if entry to the structure is required.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a dangerous substance that can cause servere damange to your health. A building may contain asbestos in the NT if the building was constructed before 1990.

Many structures may contain asbestos products such as ceiling or wall panels which may have become broken or compromised in a fire. It is possible that asbestos fibres may have become airborne in a fire event and care should be taken to avoid unnecessary exposure. Wearing a P2 style face mask at all times when inside and around a structure that contains damaged asbestos is recommended. Always shower and change clothes soon afterwards.

If asbestos has been identified at the site, you must contact the relevant authority to notify them of the fire and discuss next steps. More information on who the correct authority is can be found at the Asbestos website.

Pets and livestock

Washing down areas where ash and soot have been deposited and replacing drinking water sources is a good way to avoid exposing pets or livestock to potential sources of contamination.

Reconnecting your utilities

Utilities (gas, electirricty) may have been disconnected in the process of responding to the emergency. It is recommended for utilities to be reconnected by a qualified tradesperson. Do not do this yourself.

Recommended steps for private properties

The following steps may not be applicable to all situations and will vary based on individual circumstances and the extent of damage. Your decision to leave the premises should be guided by whether the damage necessitates seeking temporary accommodation.

Step 1: Secure the property

  • The property remains your responsibility after the fire. It is recommended to ensure it is secured to reduce further damage from weather, theft or vandalism
  • If you leave the property, make sure you take necessities or valuables with you
  • If you are not the owner, contact your landlord or property manager
  • Contact your insurer.

Step 2: Contact tradespersons

  • Contact the relevant tradespersons to reconnect utilities that may have been disconnected

If asbestos is present or suspected in the building, contact the appropriate authority. Do not enter the premises without the necessary protective equipment. Step 3: Notification

  • If you have left the premises, make sure you notify others of where you will be staying (eg, employer, friends and family, schools, and Australia Post to redirect mail).

If you are at risk of experiencing homelessness or require other services you can contact organisations such as Shelterme on shelterme.org.au, 08 8945 1388 or 08 8985 5305, or AnglicareNT 08 8985 0000.
