Be aware of your area and what could affect you
When natural disasters strike, they often cause personal and financial hardship for both individuals and communities and can result in loss of life.
Preparing psychologically for natural disasters is important. It can help you feel more confident, in control and better able to make effective emergency plans. It can also help reduce any psychological distress and longer-term mental health problems that may result from the trauma of being involved in a disaster.
The Bureau of Meteorology is responsible for provision of warnings of dangerous weather to the Australian community, with the aim of minimising injury and damage. The service is provided from the Bureau's NT Regional Forecasting Centre, information is then transmitted to authorities such as the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services and SecureNT, as well as local radio and television stations.
