Officers from Darwin Traffic Operations have arrested a 29-year-old man for speeding on Tiger Brennan Drive late last week.

Police allege his vehicle was detected travelling 153 kilometres in a 100 kilometre zone near Amy Johnston Avenue at around 11:30pm on Friday.

The Darwin Traffic Operations and Speed Camera Unit’s Officer in Charge, Senior Sergeant Angela Stringer, said when they pulled the vehicle over, the driver knew he had been caught doing the wrong thing and handed himself into police. The 29-year-old then attempted to put himself into the back of the police vehicle. Officers arrested the man for the purpose of a breath analysis, which returned a reading of .171%.

Senior Sergeant Stringer said the man’s actions could have had much more serious consequences.

“This young fellow recognised that he was doing the wrong thing and wanted to be arrested for his wrongdoing,” Snr Sgt Stringer said.

“However it would have been much better for everyone if he had considered the outcome of his actions prior to getting into his vehicle.”

The driver has been charged with:

• Driving at a Dangerous Speed
• Exceed Speed Limit – 45 kilometres
• Drive High Range Blood Alcohol Content

He is due to appear in Darwin Local Court on 21 February 2019.
