Police

Northern Territory Police have issued a further seven quarantine infringement notices over the weekend.

A 25-year-old man in Driver, who arrived in the Territory on 24 June 2020, received his third infringement notice. The man had been absent from his residence for a third time during compliance checks and police were unable to locate him for a number of days. He advised police that he had been in Adelaide River for a funeral.

A 23-year-old woman, who arrived in the Territory on 7 July 2020, dropped her child off at a childcare centre in Coconut Grove. Staff were aware that the woman had recently travelled. Police attended her residence and she was issued a fine.

A 39-year-old woman in Virginia and a 48-year-old man in the Narrows were both absent from their homes at the time of compliance checks. Both were issued a fine.

A compliance team was conducting checks in Howard Springs on a 37-year-old man who has previously been cautioned for leaving his residence. Upon arrival the man was absent from the property. Police attempted to contact the man and he continued to hang up on them. The compliance team left and returned later to speak with the man who stated he would contest the fine in court. Police also identified that his driver’s licence was suspended.

A 40-year-old man, who arrived in the Territory on 1 July 2020, was identified by a compliance team at a café in Katherine. The man advised he was out doing errands and wanted a coffee. The compliance team reminded him of his quarantine rules and he was issued a fine.

A 22-year-old woman from Alice Springs had arrived in the Territory on 27 June 2020. Police had been trying to locate the woman after she was absent from her accommodation for a number of days. The woman was identified on social media to be attending a licensed premise in Alice Springs. Police were able to track her down and issue her a fine.

The infringement penalty for failing to abide by the Chief Health Officer Directions issued under section 56 of the Public and Environmental Health Act 2011 is $1,106 for an individual and $5,530 for a business.

NT Police and Environment Health Officers continue to undertake compliance activities.

25,487 compliance checks have now been completed and 131 fines issued.
