Turn Off Bust Nets Drugs, Alcohol

Police

Northern Territory Police have made apprehensions and seized drugs and alcohol after an operation at the Minyerri turn off.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said Officers from the Drug and Organised Crime Squad, the Dog Operations Unit and Officers from Minyerri and Ngukurr were involved in the operation at the intersection of Minyerri and Roper Highway.

“The 24-hour operation on Friday and Saturday netted 12 bottles of spirits, four and a half cartons of beer and about 60 grams of cannabis,” Detective Senior Sergeant Stringer said.

“Six men, 23, 48, 34, 19, 24 and 38, were issued with infringement notices relating to the alcohol.

“A 34-year-old man was summonsed to appear for allegedly having 28 grams of cannabis under the driver’s seat of a vehicle he was driving.

"A 32-year-old woman will also be summonsed for possession of 32 grams of cannabis.

“This quantity of drugs and alcohol was bound for remote Indigenous communities.

“While there may be some people who think the amount of drugs and alcohol that was seized is minimal, oftentimes banned substances like these are sold in the community at highly inflated prices and are likely to contribute to anti-social behaviour.

“A 27-year-old man was also given a traffic infringement notice for driver unregistered and uninsured less than one month.”
