Petrol Sniffer Arrested Again

Police

A 30 year-old man who was allegedly sniffing petrol in an Alice Springs town camp has been taken into Police custody.

It is the second time in three weeks that the man has been taken into custody for the same offence.

Police were called to the camp by concerned residents and located the man just before 2pm yesterday.

As he was still under the affects of the volatile substance he was taken to an appropriate care facility.

Detective Senior Sergeant Travis Wurst said the man was allegedly showing young children how to sniff petrol.

“This is extremely disappointing for Police.   It is particularly sad to see young children being exposed to this extremely dangerous practise.  We have been working very hard with other local service providers to educate people and eradicate this dangerous practice from within Central Australia.”

Police say the consequences of petrol sniffing include violent and irrational behaviour, serious health issues and can be fatal.

Police are still investigating the most recent allegation of him showing other children how to sniff petrol.  This man however is due to face a charge of Unlawfully Suppling a Volatile Substance relating to the original incident on January the 16th.

He’s set to appear in court on that matter on the 5th of March.
