Anti-Social Behaviour in Focus as Police Launch Operation Home Safe

Police

The Northern Territory Police Force will partner with the Public Order Response Unit, Larrakia Nation, and Housing, Transit and Education Officers to deliver Operation Home Safe from 15–17 April.

The operation comes as Darwin sees increased movement following Easter, school holidays and recent weather events, with a rise in anti-social behaviour reported in key areas, particularly around shopping centres and Royal Darwin Hospital.

Operation Home Safe will target these locations with high-visibility patrols and a coordinated outreach, aimed at improving safety while supporting vulnerable people, including rough sleepers, to access services or return home where appropriate.

Superintendent Kirsten Engels said the operation is focused on both support and enforcement.

“We are seeing a range of factors contributing to anti-social behaviour in busy public places,” Superintendent Engels said.

“Our focus is on keeping areas like shopping centres and hospitals safe.

“Police and partner agencies will work with rough sleepers to connect them with support services. At the same time, anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Operation Home Safe will run across Darwin’s northern suburbs, with a focus on visible policing, early intervention and coordinated support.

“We want people to be supported and connected, but we also expect safe and respectful behaviour in public spaces,” Superintendent Engels said.
