An apology to Aboriginal Territorians

I, Michael Murphy, Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police am deeply sorry to all Aboriginal Territorians, for the past harms and injustices caused by members of the Northern Territory Police.

I formally apologise for the hurt inflicted upon Aboriginal people, and together with my fellow officers, I commit the NT Police service to do the hard work to transform our relationship with Aboriginal Territorians for a safer community for all.

We know that we cannot change or undo the past, but together we can commit to not repeating our mistakes and the injustices.

UPDATE#2 - Domestic Violence Investigation – Katherine

Police

The 36-year-old woman involved in a domestic violence incident earlier this month has passed away in hospital.

The woman died in Royal Darwin Hospital on Monday evening.

Detectives from Major Crime have been investigating the exact circumstances surrounding her death, with investigators working in both Darwin and Katherine.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jon Beer said “ This is a complex investigation and tragically a woman has now lost her life. We currently have a 45-year-old man in custody, appearing for Recklessly Endangering Life and Intend Serious Harm, Cause Any Harm.

“He has been remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on 31 July 2024 and NT Police are currently working closely with the Department of Public Prosecutions as investigations continue now that the woman has passed.

“ We have already spoken to a large number of people but we are still urging anyone with information to contact police on 131 444. Police are particularly interested in CCTV and Dash-cam from Railway Terrace between 8:30 and 9:30pm on 11 July 2024.

“Police are confident that a serious act of domestic violence was committed on the night of 11 July 2024 and if you or someone you know are experiencing difficulties due to domestic violence, support services are available, including, but not limited to, 1800RESPECT (1800737732) or Lifeline 131 114.”
