Northern Territory Firearms Amnesty

NT Firearms Amnesty with NT Police Officer - guns being destroyed

Thank you for considering this opportunity to help make our community a safer place!

The National Firearms Amnesty is being collectively coordinated across all Australian states and territories and will commence on 1 July 2021, with the intention to be a permanent fixture.

The aim of the national amnesty is to improve community safety by ensuring unwanted, unregistered firearms and/or parts, silencers, ammunition or prohibited weapons, do not fall into the hands of criminals.

This page relates specifically to the Northern Territory Firearms Amnesty. We also have a significant amount of information about licensing and firearms within the Northern Territory on our firearms and weapons page.

If you are in any doubt, you can contact us on firearms.amnesty@pfes.nt.gov.au

Northern Territory Firearms Amnesty

Surrendering firearms for registration or destruction can be conducted at any police station across the Territory, or at any of the firearms dealership nearest to you.

During the firearms amnesty, the Northern Territory Police Force will also without prosecution, accept the surrender of weapons that are prohibited or controlled as defined in the Weapons Control Act 2001  (NT).  These may include, but is not limited to:

  • Flick knives, knuckle knives, throwing blades and similar
  • Cross bows
  • Slingshots
  • Knuckle dusters
  • Batons
  • Imitation firearms (gel blasters / air soft)
  • Body armour
  • Tasers

A full list of controlled and prohibited weapons can be found on the Weapons Control Regulations 2001.

If you have knowledge of any unregistered firearms and/or parts, silencers, ammunition or prohibited weapons, and one or more of those items may be in the hands of criminal elements, you should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or visit crimestoppers.com.au.

Fireworks

It is an offence to be in possession of fireworks after Territory Day celebrations.

Fireworks may also be surrendered without fear of prosecution. You can surrender fireworks to NT WorkSafe front counters (Alice Springs, Katherine and Darwin) at any time of the year. If you are outside these locations you can surrender them to a police station front counter.

FAQs

What is an amnesty?

An amnesty provides members of the community the opportunity to surrender an item/article that may be in their possession illegally (unlicensed), and without fear of prosecution.

Though more importantly it is a responsible way in which the community can assist in improving public safety by preventing these items/articles from potentially falling into the hands of criminals.

How do I surrender a firearm, firearm parts, silencers, ammunition or prohibited weapons?

You simply need to attend any firearms dealership or a police station front counter and surrender the item (ensure it is covered or in a carry bag when being surrendered).

If you are uncertain and require further advice, email firearms.amnesty@pfes.nt.gov.au with your enquiry.

Where can I surrender a firearm, firearm parts, silencers, ammunition or prohibited weapons?

You can surrender the item/article at a firearms dealership or at any police station front counter. Those living in the Darwin region are recommended to visit the Palmerston Police Station.

If you are uncertain and require further advice, email firearms.amnesty@pfes.nt.gov.au with your enquiry.

What happens after I surrender my firearm, firearm parts, silencers, ammunition or prohibited weapons?

You will be requested to complete the National Firearms Amnesty Surrender Form, however under the amnesty you have the option to remain anonymous if you so wish.

What do police do with the surrendered firearm, firearm parts, silencers, ammunition or prohibited weapons?

Firearms, providing they are not prohibited firearms (refer to pages 123-124 of Firearms Act 1997), are able to be registered to a person with an NT Shooters licence, and whose licence holds that category of firearm.

Alternatively if the firearm is degraded or unsafe or has no resale or sentimental value, it can be destroyed.

Can I surrender fireworks?

Yes. You can anonymously surrender fireworks to NT WorkSafe front counters (Alice Springs, Katherine and Darwin) at any time of the year. If you are outside these locations you can surrender them to a police station front counter.
