Drug and Firearm Seizure - Darwin River

Police

Police charged a 42-year-old Darwin River man after seizing an amount of drug and firearms at his rural property yesterday.

Members executed a search warrant at the man's property at about 12.45 pm revealing a total of eight firearms and a large quantity of cannabis. During the search police also located a hydroponic grow room containing one cannabis plant located in a rear shed.

The following items were seized as a result of the search:

A total of 766 grams of cannabis
7.62 Mauser Bold action rifle
.22 Stirling Bolt action rifle
Single barrel shotgun - Sportco
Side by side shotgun -Naniwa Kogyo
308 Winchester
357 Magnum Marlin lever action rifle
.303 Lithgow bolt action rifle
.177 Air rifle
The offender was arrested at the scene and conveyed to Darwin Watch House where he has since been charged in relation to the following offences:

Cultivate cannabis
Possess commercial quantity of cannabis
8 x fail to meet storage requirements (firearms)
2 x fail to meet storage requirements (ammunition)
2 x unregistered firearms
He is due to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 15 November 2010.

Superintendent Matt Hollamby said this was the second large firearm seizure in weeks.

"This is the second time in the past month police have seized a large number of unsecured and unregistered firearms"

"Drugs and guns are a bad mix and dangerous to our community. I urge anyone with information in relation drug or firearm offenders to contact police on 131 444" he said.
