Victims Requested to Assist Police

Alice Springs Detectives are calling for two victims of assault to come forward.

Officers from the Southern Investigation Unit were following up reports of an assault with intent to steal on a 49 year-old man on Tuesday night 21 February; during the course of this investigation two more assaults, allegedly committed by the same group of youths on the same night have come to the attention of Police.

At approximately 9.30pm several youths attacked an aboriginal man who was sitting on the ground on vacant land commonly referred to as the old Melanka site.  He was punched, kicked and beaten with sticks.  The man staggered from the area and Police are requesting he come forward to assist with inquires.

Ten minutes later on the same site an aboriginal woman was surrounded by the youths and threatened with sticks and rocks.  Police believe they may have stolen items from her.  The woman also left the area and has not reported the incident to Police.  Again Police request she come forward to assist in inquires.

At 10pm a 49 year-old man was walking through the area and was set upon after refusing to hand over money.  The assault went on for several minutes before a passing car came to the aid of the man.

Police have identified and arrested two youths aged 15 and 14 in relation to this assault.  They have been charged with Engage in Violent Conduct, Armed with Offensive Weapons, Assault with Intent to Steal and Aggravated Assault.

Constable First Class Rose MacDonald said that Police would like to speak to the two victims involved in the earlier incidents.

“Police would also like to hear from any other person who may have been in the area and witnessed one or more of these assaults.”
