Northern Territory Police have arrested seven people following the death of two young men during Friday’s disturbances in the Groote Eylandt township of Angurugu.

Commander Tony Fuller said that whilst tensions in the community are still high, progress was made earlier today when 13 individuals from Umbakumba surrendered themselves to Alyangula Police.

“We continue to work with the community of Angurugu to restore calm following four days of tension,” Commander Fuller said.

“As a result, seven people have been arrested and are currently en route to Darwin where they will be interviewed by Major Crime detectives.

“A high Police presence remains in place on Groote Eylandt and investigations are continuing to identify further suspects involved in Friday’s unrest.”

Northern Territory Police acknowledge the assistance of community members from Umbakumba. Commander Fuller said: “These men have voluntarily surrendered to take responsibility for their actions from Friday.

“They are all part of the group in which the 19 year old male was killed.

“Included in the group of seven are significant persons of interest who Police allege were responsible for the death of the 29 year old man.

“Local Police, with the support of officers who have travelled from Darwin and Katherine, have worked tirelessly in negotiating the safe arrests of these alleged offenders.  

“They have shown an extraordinary degree of restraint, tolerance, patience and trust to achieve this outcome and it goes a long way to restoring community balance.

“Again, we thank those who assisted in this negotiation.

“Our next aim is to gather the trust of the second group and negotiate a similar surrender of those involved in this tragic event. Once again, our priority is to avoid any further violent confrontations.”
