Arrest - Assault police- Katherine

Police

The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested three people after a police officer was assaulted in Katherine last night.

About 7:30pm, Territory Mounted Unit members conducting social order patrols on Railway Terrace directed a 24-year-old male to stop drinking in public and acting in a disorderly manner. The male tried to walk away and continue drinking; however, he failed to follow police direction and became aggressive towards police.

OC spray was required to be deployed and two officers were injured during the arrest with one suffering multiple punches to the face.

More people within the area started threatening the officers and then some people of the group began to throw objects at the officers until more police arrived on scene.

A 22-year-old male and a 51-year-old female were also arrested during this time for their involvement. Charges are expected to be laid today.

The police officer that was assaulted attended the hospital to be treated for serious face injuries.

Senior Sergeant Meacham King said “This attack on our members was totally unwarranted and concerning but unfortunately starting to become more frequent. Thankfully our members were able to get this situation under control before matters got even worse.

"We are confident our officers responded appropriately and in accordance with NTPF procedures.

"They were out conducting pro-active patrols in Katherine to limit the effects of alcohol in our community.

"There was significant opportunity for the people involved to comply with police direction and be on their way, but they made the conscious decision to make this incident confrontational.

"The mounted unit is close knit group of people, and we will support our colleague as will the NT Police Force as a whole, whilst he recovers.”
