Northern Territory Police have arrested two youths in relation to recent property offences in Katherine.

Around 9pm 4 June 2024, a Katherine community support service was allegedly unlawfully entered by an unknown number of offenders. A silver Toyota Corolla was stolen from the premises along with several vehicle keys.

The stolen vehicle was then used to ram open the front entrance gate, causing significant property damage. The stolen vehicle fled the location and was observed driving around Katherine later in the night. 

At around 2:40am the next day, CCTV Operators observed the stolen vehicle attend Bicentennial Rd, Katherine.  Two male youth exited the stolen vehicle and attempted to refuel with no success. Both youth returned to the stolen vehicle and drove off towards the Katherine CBD, where it was later abandoned in nearby bushland.

With the combined efforts of Strike Force Cerberus, General Duties, Katherine Criminal Investigation Branch, Territory Intelligence, CCTV operators, and members of the community the stolen vehicle was located and recovered.

A 14-year-old male was arrested and charged with one count of Driving, Using or Riding Motor Vehicle Without Consent.

Another 14-year-old male will be dealt with under provisions of the Youth Justice Act 2005.

Acting Senior Sergeant Stephen Jones said “This is a good example of Northern Territory Police and the community working together.

“Property crime will not be tolerated and offenders will be identified and dealt with appropriately under the provisions of the youth justice act and the courts."
