Police across the Northern Territory thank members of the public for their behaviour during New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Territory Duty Superintendent Rob Farmer said the night progressed without any significant incidents.
“I would like to thank the efforts of police and emergency personnel, and other government departments who worked overnight with us to ensure the safety of all Territorians.
“Of course our biggest thanks go to you, the public, who assisted by enjoying yourselves and looking out for your fellow party-goers,” he said.
The Darwin Water Front attracted a large crowd in excess of 3500 people for the 9:00pm fireworks display, some traffic issues post event delayed people going home but drivers displayed patience and it was soon cleared.
The midnight event attracted a crowd of around 1500 people with no incidents reported to police.
Mitchell Street attracted a large crowd but with police patrols displaying a zero tolerance approach to disorderly persons and a high visibility presence, very few incidents required police intervention.
Darwin traffic officers thank the 2046 drivers who tested negative to alcohol however 11 drivers were arrested for exceeding limits including one high range (0.152) eight mid-range, (including a 0.135 and 0.131) one learner driver who tested positive and one low range reading.
There were no arrests in the city although 20 people received infringement notices for disorderly behaviour and 18 were taken into protective custody.
Two drug infringement notices were issued and one traffic infringement notice.
In Alice Springs there were no major incidents reported across any of the venues holding New Year celebrations.
The 'Splash Party' at the Alice Springs Aquatic Centre attracted a crowd of around 400 persons and police thank the event organisers for their planning and supervision.
There were four arrests but none of these were related to festivities.
Unfortunately, southern traffic officers also returned disappointing figures with seven drivers arrested for exceeding breath alcohol limits. (Four mid-range and three low-range)
17 traffic infringement notices were issued and one vehicle seized for hooning.
Alice Springs police also thank patrons for their overall excellent behaviour.
