Northern Territory Police are reminding the public that it is an offence under the Firearms Act to carry firearms exposed to public view in a public place.
Earlier today, police issued a $655 fine after a man open carried two bolt-action rifles into Casuarina Police Station.
Casuarina Station Officer-in-Charge Acting Senior Sergeant Leif Hovland said front-counter operators quickly established the member of the public had no malicious intent and was bringing the firearms in for inspection and a licence renewal.
“This is a timely reminder to all members of the public that if for any reason you need to take a firearm to a police station, please ensure they are suitably contained a gun case or another legally appropriate covering, or a blanket,” he said.
