Inaugural Family Violence Policing Conference to launch in Alice Springs

Police

More than 200 delegates will arrive in Alice Springs next week for the inaugural Indigenous Family Violence Policing Conference.

The delegates, from all around Australia, are ready to talk about what can really be done to reduce family violence in Aboriginal communities.

Commissioner Reece Kershaw said the conference presented an opportunity for the Northern Territory Police, and local organisations to showcase to and learn from other jurisdictions.

“This conference focuses on doing what’s right, not what’s popular. We want to have real discussions about what’s working, and not working, to reduce violence in our communities,” he said.

“Community engagement and collaboration will be a common theme for this conference, highlighting different approaches to tackle violence at a grass roots level.

“We are the proud hosts of this year’s conference and look forward to a valuable and memorable event.”

A high-quality training program has been developed with a variety of topics and a showcase of grass root initiatives that are working in remote communities across the country.

Keynote speakers include AFL superstar Kevin Sheedy, anti-violence campaigner Charlie King, and Dr Emma Partridge from Our Watch. Black Comedy star Steven Oliver will be the event’s Master of Ceremonies.

Some delegates will also get the opportunity to attend a remote workshop in Hermannsburg, meeting the local community to get a better understanding of the issues that the community faces.

The conference is being held at the Alice Springs Convention Centre from 7 to 9 June and will conclude with a NO MORE Violence Ball on the Friday night.

The conference is co-hosted by the Northern Territory Police and the Rirratingu Aboriginal Corporation.
