Charges – Deprivation of Liberty – Darwin

Police

Northern Territory Police have charged two people following an alleged deprivation of liberty and robbery in Darwin on Saturday evening, 12 August.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant David Allan of the Serious Crime Squad said a 71-year-old man was approached by a 33-year-old man and 29-year-old woman while standing near his car at Casuarina Beach about 5:00pm.

“The male told him he was going to take his vehicle to go and get fuel,” he said.

“The victim refused and was shoved to the ground. The offenders got in the victim’s vehicle and, attempting to prevent his car being stolen, the victim climbed into the back seat.”

Acting Senior Sergeant Allan said the pair allegedly spent the next eight hours using the victim’s vehicle, while he was still in the back seat.

“About 1:00am, the offenders drove the vehicle to a carpark in Pinelands. They left the scene – and the victim – about 4:30am with the victim’s wallet, keys and mobile phone.

“The victim walked to a nearby business and police were contacted.

“He was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital with minor injuries.”

The two offenders were arrested at a residence in Malak yesterday.

They were charged with numerous offences including:

  • Deprivation of liberty
  • Aggravated robbery

The male was also charged with recklessly endangering life and aggravated assault.

They will appear in Darwin Local Court today.
