Person in custody following shooting

Police

A 38 year-old female is in Police custody after shots were fired in the rural area of Darwin at around 2.30 this afternoon.

A 63 year-old female has received serious injuries from a single gunshot wound to the arm and chest and a 43 year-old man has a gunshot wound to the hand.

Commander Richard Bryson said early investigations have led Police to believe this was a domestic incident.

“The woman has fired several shots from a handgun striking the woman and the man before fleeing the area.

“The 63 year-old has made her way to the Palmerston Police Station where she reported the incident and was immediately transported to Royal Darwin Hospital.

“The man was treated at the scene.”

Commander Bryson said investigations were still underway and two crime scenes will remain in place in Virginia and Howard Springs until further notice.

“This was a serious incident that has been resolved without any further people being injured.  Police will take some time in their investigations and we thank the members of the public for their patience during this situation.”

The woman was arrested without incident when she attempted to go through a Police roadblock.
