Northern Territory Police encourage Territorians to join them and take a stand against violence against women and join the White Ribbon Day solidarity march.
One in three women over the age of 15 report physical of sexual violence at sometime in their lives.
In the last twelve months more than 3,700 female Territorians over the age of 15 have been victims of domestic violence.
NT Police are committed to ensuring the safety of women and children in the community by taking direct action against the perpetrators of violence and providing available support to suffers.
In line with the principles of Project Respect – Enforce, Engage and Empower, Strike Force Viridian has been designed to reduce the incidents of domestic and family violence and hold perpetrators to account in the Darwin area.
Detective Superintendent Bradley Currie said in line with the Northern Territory Police Domestic and Family Violence Strategy Project Respect, NT Police will continue to focus on reducing domestic and family violence and keep people safe here in the Northern Territory.
“Every adult and child has the right to a safe environment and NT Police want to send a clear message that offenders of domestic and family violence will be held accountable for their actions.
“Strike Force Viridian will focus exclusively upon targeted operations aimed at family and domestic violence offenders in the Darwin Metropolitan Command.
“Dedicated specialist staff will form the new Strike Force established to achieve a reduction in assaults as well as target repeat domestic violence offenders.
“Police will provide a high level investigative response to domestic violence related crime,” he said.
The Launch of Strike Force Viridian coincides with White Ribbon Day – Australia’s campaign to stop violence against women. The day aims to raise awareness about violence and the statistics for Domestic Violence are very worrying indeed.
Assistant Commissioner Crime and Specialist Services, Reece Kershaw, is an Ambassador for White Ribbon Day and explains that the NT Police Force supports this cause and everyone has a responsibility to report domestic violence.
“When you see people hurting or you see them in trouble you need to step in and tell someone so this doesn’t happen again,” he said.
Assistant Commissioner Kershaw urges all Territory men to participate in the ’Swear the Oath’ campaign for White Ribbon, by ’swearing’ to stop violence against women.
Police will join marches across the Territory and invite the community to join them in a White Ribbon Solidarity March to show your support for Australia’s campaign to stop violence against women.
In Darwin the march will commence at 11am at the Bennett Street end of the Smith Street Mall, continue down the Mall finishing up at Raintree Park where a community BBQ will be held.
