Youth to face Court for Alleged Handbag Theft - Darwin

Police

A 17-year-old remains in Police custody after he allegedly tried to steal a woman’s handbag from a licensed premises in central Darwin.

Officer in Charge of Darwin Police Station Senior Sergeant Michael Hebb said the teenage boy was walking past the hotel last night when he allegedly stole the bag.

“The youth was walking along the footpath past some tables outside a hotel at about 9.30 when he allegedly reached over a railing and took the bag from a table,” Senior Sergeant Hebb said.

“This was seen by a member of the public who, with another person, gave chase.

“The two men apprehended the youth and called Police.

“The youth then escaped and ran through the city before being apprehended again.

“Generally whilst Police do not encourage the public to confront offenders, on this occasion the assistance did lead to an arrest and the recovery of property.”

Senior Sergeant Hebb said the incident is reminder to all people to keep their valuables safe.

“Police have received a number of reports of personal belongings being stolen from licensed premises and entertainment venues when they are left unattended or the owner is distracted,” he said.

“Many of these types of crimes are opportunistic, and it only takes a second for someone’s belongings to be snatched.

“If you are out and about keep your handbag, wallet, phone and other valuables close to you.”

Senior Sergeant Hebb said the teenager was charged with:

Stealing;

Breach bail.

He will appear in the Darwin Youth Justice Court on 9 March.
