Woman Transferred to Darwin

Police

A woman involved in an incident in Katherine early this morning was transferred to Darwin for assessment and treatment.

Acting Superintendent Gavin Kennedy said the 28-year-old was released from Police custody to allow her transfer.

“The woman underwent a mental health assessment in Katherine and was referred to Darwin for further assessment and treatment,” Acting Superintendent Kennedy said.

The woman allegedly attacked a tough phone and was wielding a knife, with a 30 centimetre long blade, in front of Officers at the Katherine Police Station at about 1.30 this morning, Acting Superintendent Gavin Kennedy said.

“The Officer acted appropriately as the woman was armed and displaying erratic behaviour,” he said.

“Verbal negotiations with the woman were unsuccessful and the Taser was deployed and fully discharged, which allowed for the woman and the knife to be secured safely.

“A charge of going armed in public is being considered.”
