Weather Advice – Alice Springs

Police

The Regional Controller and NT Emergency Service members are working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to monitor a large and active cloud band that has formed across the southern half of the Territory.

Commander Michael Murphy of the Southern Command said it had been quite wet over the weekend and rainfall was expected to increase in the coming days.

“Alice Springs has been experiencing scattered showers for a number of days and there are more expected throughout the afternoon and evening,” Commander Murphy said.

“We are expecting between 20-60mm rainfalls across the Alice Springs District tomorrow, which could lead to significant stream rises and possibly some localised flooding.

“In times like these people need to remember three very important rules.

  • Don’t camp in dry riverbeds. Flash flooding can occur with minimal warning and can vanish as quickly as it arrived.
  • Don’t swim in flooded rivers or drains. The water can often flow faster than it appears and debris under the surface can present another potentially deadly obstacle.
  • Don’t drive through flooded causeways. The current of the water can sweep vehicles off roads, even if it is relatively shallow.

“I urge everyone to take these messages on board and to also visit the Bureau of Meteorology website on www.bom.gov.au/nt/ or the Department of Construction and Infrastructure’s Road Report website on www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/roadreport/ should you be planning to travel.”
