Towns Coping Well With Weather Events

Police

Northern Territory Police Fire and Emergency Services report that towns affected by weather events across the top end are coping well and are prepared for any further issues.

Floodwaters in the Palumpa community continue to recede.  Residents relocated due to inundation are in other dwellings not affected by water.  They will wait until water levels drop and it is safe to return.   Power, water and sewerage have remained connected through the flood event and the community store remains open and is well stocked.   A Recovery Team will inspect buildings that were inundated on Monday to ensure that they are safe for residents to return.

Daly River community reports the water levels are at 13.5 metres and are slowly rising with peak inundation now expected to reach 13.7 sometime Monday.

The communities of Kalkarindgi, Yarrilin and Pigeon Hole remain stable with no reports of inundation to dwellings.

The Roper / McArthur district has been placed on a cyclone watch as a tropical low in Queensland threatens to develop into a category one system late today or early Monday.

Borroloola Police report the community is well prepared.

The Arnhem highway is now closed to all traffic along the Adelaide River Floodplain.

Superintendent Daniel Bacon said people should remain cautious around floodwaters and stay aware of developing weather situations.

“Non – essential travel should be limited and people should check road conditions before venturing out.  In remote areas conditions can change very quickly and people should exercise extreme caution near floodways and river crossings.

People should stay updated with local weather conditions from internet sites such as the Bureau of Meteorology and Secure NT for the latest information, remain crocwise and don't play in floodwaters or drains.”
