Structure Fire Nhulunbuy

Police

The caretaker’s residence and storage sheds attached to the Gove Surf Lifesaving Club have been destroyed by a fire that started around 6pm yesterday afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon, Officer in Charge of the Nhulunbuy Police Station said that thankfully no one was injured in the fire.

“The caretaker was at home at the time and was alerted to the developing fire by his dog.  Emergency Services were notified immediately and attended swiftly.”

Eugenia Road was closed while Emergency vehicles were in attendance and the wind helped direct thick smoke away from the town.

“Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Units, assisted by local volunteers have done a fantastic job to respond to this incident very quickly.  They were able to restrict the blaze to the sheds and residence which saved the main club room.”

A forensic team and specialist fire investigators arrived in Nhulunbuy this morning and have established the cause of the fire to be an electrical fault.
