Police Search for Good Samaritan Darwin

Police

Darwin Police would like to find a Good Samaritan who assisted an injured Officer to apprehend an intoxicated and violent man in the city last night.

Acting Superintendent Michael Hebb said the Good Samaritan was walking along Cavenagh Street when a 20-year-old man, who had allegedly escaped Police custody and was being chased by Police, ran directly into his path before running off along the street.

“The Good Samaritan chased the man, who moments earlier had allegedly assaulted a Police Officer, apprehending him until Officers placed the man into custody,” Acting Superintendent Michael Hebb said.

“We would like to hear from this man to assist with our enquiries.”

Acting Superintendent Hebb said a Police Officer sustained a possible fractured wrist in the incident, which began when the Officer found an intoxicated man walking along Knuckey Street at about 10pm.

“For his own safety, the 20-year-old male was conveyed to a hotel in the city, where he said he was staying,” Acting Superintendent Michael Hebb said.

“The man did not enter the hotel, instead walked down a side street. When he was again approached he allegedly told the Officer he did not know where he was staying.

“The intoxicated man was informed that he would be taken into protective custody for his own safety.

“The man allegedly pushed the Officer, before throwing a number of punches at the Officer.  In the ensuing struggle, both the Officer and the man fell to the ground.

“The alleged offender then left the scene, which is where he ran into the path of our Good Samaritan.

“The man was charged with:

Assault a member of the Police force;

Resist Police in execution of duty, and;

Escape from lawful custody.

“He was bailed to appear in Maningrida Court on April 14.”
