NT & WA Police Bust Drug Runners

Police

Two men have been arrested in Perth following a joint operation between Northern Territory Detectives and Organised Crime Squad members from Western Australia.

5.6 kilograms of cannabis was seized in the sting after Alice Springs based Taskforce Seeadler Officers from the federally funded Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, had set up a vehicle checkpoint north of the town on the 16th of December.

The checkpoints are part of an ongoing combined operation between Substance Abuse Detectives and local members targeting the trafficking of drugs and alcohol into aboriginal communities.

A bus was checked at the roadblock and Drug Detection dog Leo had a positive reaction to a package located in the freight compartment.

The package had originated in Victoria and was on its way to Western Australia.

Police seized the considerable amount of cannabis found in the package, re-sealed it and sent it on to Perth where WA Detectives were waiting on the afternoon of December 23rd.

Superintendent Travis Wurst said two men were arrested when they claimed the package.

“A 38 year-old man has been charged with attempt to supply a prohibited drug with intent to sell and a 34 year-old man was charged with attempt to possess a prohibited drug with intent to sell.”

“This is a significant find and through co-operation with WA Police a good result by all concerned.  It proves that the reach of Police in the fight against illicit drugs easily transcends State and Territory borders.” Superintendent Wurst added.
