No Further Evidence - Alleged Sexual Assault - Nightcliff

Police

Despite a dedicated Police team of 16 detectives and a large scale investigation, no further evidence has been brought forward following the report of an alleged sexual assault in Nightcliff last week.

The report was made by a 15-year-old female on the afternoon of 21 February.

Superintendent Jo Foley said following extensive door knocks of the area, significant publicity calling for witnesses and the fact the incident is alleged to have occurred in broad daylight, no further information has been submitted to assist Police with this investigation.

“It is unusual that no member of the public has come forward with information to assist with this Police investigation into a reported incident alleged to have occurred in broad daylight on well used roads.

“It is also regrettable that the victim's family have informed Police that the 15-year-old will no longer assist police including providing a formal statement beyond the initial report already made.

“As a result, the inconsistencies in the initial report are unable to be clarified including whether there was one offender or two, or any descriptions of the individual or individuals involved.

“Given no further evidence has been brought forward or uncovered by Police Detectives to support the initial report, the investigation is unable to continue unless a victim statement and fresh information is provided to Police.” Superintendent Jo Foley concluded.

Police take all reports of this nature seriously and continue to urge any members of the public who may have any information to support this particular incident to contact them on 131 444 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Background:

The vehicle was described as being dark in colour and similar to an 80 Series Landcruiser.

The victim reported being dragged into the vehicle on Bougainvillea Street, sexually assaulted while the vehicle was driven to Hickory Street where she was dropped off.

Although it was initially reported to Police that one male was involved, in order for the vehicle to have been in motion while the alleged sexual assault occurred as reported, a second person/co-offender would have been driving.

There are no descriptions of the alleged offender or driver of the vehicle including whether they are Caucasian or otherwise.
