Nhulunbuy structure fire

Police

Police and NT Fire and Rescue members were kept busy overnight tending to a structure fire in Nhulunbuy.

Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon from the Nhulunbuy Police Station said the fire was reported at around 8:45pm, however upon Police arrival the single storey home on Sinclair Street was fully engulfed in flames.

“NT Fire and Rescue were in attendance and extinguished the blaze within a short time, however the house was seriously damaged by the flames,” Senior Sergeant Muldoon said.

“Investigations into the exact cause of the blaze are continuing, however, at this stage, we believe it may have started from candles left lit inside the premises.

“This again shows the need to install photoelectric smoke alarms in homes. Thankfully no one was home at the time, but it could easily have ended in tragedy.”
