Missing man located - Galiwinku

Police

The body of a 23-year-old male was located in Galiwinku this morning following a day long search and rescue effort yesterday.

Senior Constable First Class Travis Edwards from the Territory Response Group said Police received reports that an 11-year-old girl had been swept off Dhudupu Beach at around 1:30 pm.

“Police, NT Emergency Service volunteers, rangers, a doctor and community members attended and upon arrival, established the man had also entered the water to rescue the girl,” Senior Constable First Class Edwards said.

“A Police vessel located the girl and pulled her from the water. She was treated by local health clinic staff and has made a full recovery.

“It appears the male had managed to reach the young girl and assist her in staying afloat before he disappeared.

“A Police vessel and a plane commenced search operations to find the missing man, however were suspended overnight due to fading light.

“The deceased male was located early this morning.

“This is a tragic incident where an act of bravery has resulted in this young man losing his life. I urge everyone within the Territory to think twice before entering any body of water. In these rough conditions, the currents can be extremely dangerous.”
