A 46-year-old man will appear in court today facing charges of sexual assault and unlawfully causing serious harm.

Detective Sergeant Sonia Kennon of the Sex Crimes Unit said Police allege the male sexually assaulted a 49-year-old female, who sustained severe injuries during the assault, which later required surgery.

The man was charged and remanded in custody and is due to appear at the Darwin Magistrates Court today.
