Man arrested – Causing serious harm – Alice Springs

A 28-year-old man is in Police custody assisting with enquiries in relation to an assault which occurred in Alice Springs this week.

Detective Sergeant Leith Phillips of the Southern Investigations Section said the incident occurred at around 7:30pm on Wednesday, 2 May at a residence on Aneura Place.

“It appears the man was drinking alcohol with another man, 29, when an altercation occurred,” Detective Sergeant Phillips said.

“The alleged offender armed himself with a hammer and struck the 29-year-old victim several times to the head. Police allege he also cut the throat of the victim with a meat cleaver before fleeing the scene.

“The victim attempted to stop the bleeding using a pair of jeans and drove to a nearby family member’s house. He was then taken to Alice Springs Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.”
