Major Drug Bust - Alyangula

Police

A Groote Eylandt man will face court in Darwin this morning after Northern Territory Police arrested him for possession and supply of a commercial quantity of cannabis following the discovery of 900 grams of the drug in a package sent through the post.

Sergeant Peter Winton of the Alyangula Police Station said Police will allege the drugs, which have a street value on Groote Eylandt in excess of $90,000, were destined for distribution in the local community.

“Nine hundred grams is a substantial seizure of cannabis for this location,” Sergeant Winton said.

“Cannabis has a devastating effect in this island community. It is disappointing to see that greedy individuals seek to profit from trafficking these harmful drugs.”

The 35-year-old was arrested on Thursday at Alyangula and was remanded to appear in Darwin Magistrates court today.

Members of the public with information on drug dealers are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
