Detectives from the Serious Crime Squad are investigating an assault which occurred on an elderly man in the early hours of this morning.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Board said the 72-year-old man approached a group of people at the back of his Shiers Street unit at about 2am to tell them to quieten down.

“As the man walked back to his residence, he was allegedly stabbed in the back and then assaulted by the group of up to four people,” Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Board said.

“The victim also received head injuries during the alleged assault and was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

“Police urge anyone who may have witnessed the event, or who may have seen the group earlier in the night, to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
