Drunk Drivers Continue to Frustrate Police

Police

Two high-range drink drivers have Alice Springs Police deeply concerned there will be a fatal crash before Christmas.

Sergeant Conan Robertson from the Southern Traffic Division said both drivers had previously lost their licence for similar offences and both were carrying unrestrained passengers.

“There will be a tragic result if some people’s attitude to driving doesn’t improve dramatically.  Both of these drivers had a responsibility for the passengers in the vehicles and would have been held accountable if something happened to them, not only through legal proceedings but also by the families of the people involved."

On Friday afternoon a 47 year-old man was subject to a random breath test at the intersection of Stuart Highway and Palm Circuit; he had five passengers in the back of the Ford Falcon sedan including a 4 year-old child who was unrestrained.

The man returned a reading of 0.186.

Checks later revealed the man had given a false name to Police and had been disqualified from driving for 8 years in October 2009.

The man was charged with several offences and remanded in custody to appear on November 19.

On Saturday night a 50 year-old man was apprehended on Stuart Highway driving a Holden Commodore ute with three people riding in the tray.

The man returned a reading of 0.220.

Checks revealed the man was disqualified from driving in 2002 and had not renewed his licence.  He was bailed to appear on December 18.

"The three adults in the back of the ute are fools and would not have survived a crash.   When someone is this drunk they are a ticking time bomb and the idiots in the open load space had nothing to protect them from the fatal forces of even a minor crash,

"Our road toll is tragically high and we don't need stupidity like this contributing to an already dangerous environment."  Sergeant Robertson concluded.
