A 32-year-old male is currently in Police custody assisting with enquiries following the death of a 26-year-old male on the Roper Highway last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Clint Sims said it was reported to Police at around 8:30 pm that a male was lying on the road, approximately 12 km’s east of Mataranka.

“Police from Mataranka and Katherine, members from the local Fire Emergency Response Group (FERG) and health clinic staff attended, however the male was declared deceased at the scene,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Sims.

“A vehicle, believed to have been in the area at the time of the incident has been seized as investigations continue.

“Anyone that may have further information relating to this incident is urged to contact Police on 131 444.” 

This is the first death on Territory roads this year, compared to zero for the same period last year.
