Daly River Continues to Rise

Police

Residents in the Daly River Community have been advised to move to higher ground and prepare for isolation as the river continues to rise.

Currently the river level is at 13.3 metres at the Daly River Police Station.

Superintendent Daniel Bacon said  a small number of vulnerable members of the community have been evacuated to the Wooliana School where Northern Territory Emergency Services personnel and members of the  Local Counter Disaster Committee have  established a  temporary shelter.

“At this stage we are expecting the Community to become cut off sometime this afternoon or evening when the height reaches 13.5 metres.   A community meeting has been held and people were advised that if they wished to leave the community, then they should do so today to avoid being isolated.

“We are also monitoring the situation in the communities of Kalkarindgi, Pigeon Hole, Palumpa and Yarralin.”

Superintendent Bacon said flood prediction models from the Bureau of Meteorology have the Daly River reaching a peak of near 13.7 metres sometime Sunday or early Monday.   The Community is in good spirits and are well versed in dealing with flood events in their community.

Police also advise the Arnhem Highway has up to 200 millimetres of water over the road in places and urges drivers to use extreme caution if travelling between the Adelaide River Bridge and Jabiru.

The road is open to traffic at this stage and will continue to be closely monitored.
