Club Wielding Man Charged - Nhulunbuy

Police

A 39 year-old man has been charged with Going Armed in Public following an alleged alcohol fuelled incident in East Arnhem Land last night.

Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon, OIC of Nhulunbuy Police Station, said the man had caused a considerable amount of fear in the small community where the offence took place.

“The man had armed himself with what Police understand to be a ceremonial club and has allegedly proceeded to smash property belonging to other residents.

“Police observed the man with the weapon shortly after arriving on the scene and despite repeated warnings to drop the club the man refused and was sprayed with OC spray.”

Senior Sergeant Muldoon said the man was arrested and taken to the Nhulunbuy Police Station.

“He was charged last night and in the light of day appeared to be rather embarrassed by his actions.

“Police will continue to urge people to use alcohol responsibly and be aware that violence and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.”
