Cannabis Seizure - Central Australia

Alice Springs Police have seized 25 kilograms of Cannabis during a traffic operation this morning, believed to be worth up to 1.25-million dollars if sold in remote communities.

Police set up a checkpoint at the Stuart Highway/Tanami Highway turnoff.

“Just after half-past-10, Police stopped a vehicle for the purposes of a drug search.” Said Acting Superintendent Travis Wurst.

“The check point was specifically designed to target drug trafficking, distribution and abuse in remote communities.”

“Drug dog Yona responded to the possible presence of drugs in the utility.” Said Act Supt Wurst.

“Further examination found 50 cryovac bags of Cannabis hidden in the tray of the ute.”

“A 56-year-old man is currently in Police custody and is expected to be charged with Possessing a Commercial Quantity of Cannabis.”
