$58 000 worth of methamphetamine seized Katherine

Police

Members from the Katherine Dog Operations Unit, Northern Investigation Section and Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk have seized a trafficable quantity of methamphetamine with an anticipated street value of approximately $58,000 after a pulling over a vehicle yesterday morning.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Andy Bedwell said a 24-year-old man was stopped by Police near the high level bridge and Drug Detector Dog, Archie, was deployed to search the car.

“Drug Detector Dog, Archie, provided a positive response to the presence of drugs in the car and members located 26.4 grams of methamphetamine inside the glove box.

“The 24-year-old man has since been charged with possession and supply of methamphetamine in a trafficable quantity and possession of an implement used to administer a drug.

“It is alleged the man was also driving under the influence of drugs after he provided a positive result to a roadside drug saliva test. Charges in relation to driving under the influence of a drug are pending blood test results.

“The man and his two passengers were travelling from Queensland to Darwin and it is a great outcome to know that these dangerous drugs didn’t get the chance to cause Northern Territorians any sort of harm.

“This type of seizure highlights the value and important role of the Drug Detector Dogs in locating drugs. When it comes to the detection of harmful, illicit substances, we will use whatever resources we deem appropriate and our Drug Detector Dogs are a vital asset in the crackdown of drugs entering our communities and hitting our streets,” said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Bedwell.
